From Florida Otaku to Japan Expert
Three decades of gaming, anime, and Japanese culture obsession led us here. What started with an NES controller and Final Fantasy has become annual pilgrimages to Japan—and soon, a permanent move.
We’re beta veterans of the MMO world, having lived through Final Fantasy XI’s glory days and World of Warcraft’s evolution since launch. Our engagement happened in Azshara before Cataclysm changed everything, and we’re still raiding together in FFXIV today. Gaming isn’t just entertainment for us—it’s been our shared language for decades. Our Final Fantasy-themed wedding wasn’t quirky; it was authentic. The tattoos covering our arms tell the story of every numbered entry in the series, backed by a collection of every game and rare collectibles that span decades of dedication.
Japan revealed itself differently than we expected. Walking into the Final Fantasy Cafe in Akihabara was magical, sure, but what really captured us was everything else—the peaceful efficiency, the cleanliness, the way society just works. We fell in love with convenience store culture as much as Gunpla shopping. The contrast between Florida chaos and Japanese order made our decision inevitable.
Our manga library spans every genre from isekai adventures to shoujo romance. Modern series like Overlord and Apothecary Diaries hit us with the same excitement as discovering Evangelion and Gundam back in the day. We appreciate quality figures—Gunpla for the building experience, well-crafted bishoujo pieces for the artistry—but we’re collectors, not completionists.
Every restaurant recommendation comes from meals we’ve actually eaten, every travel tip from mistakes we’ve made and lessons learned. Our gluten-free dining guides exist because we had to figure it out ourselves. When we review a retro game or analyze an anime’s cultural references, it’s through the lens of people who lived through these franchises’ entire evolution.
Moving to Japan isn’t about escaping reality—it’s about embracing the lifestyle that makes sense to us after thirty years of loving the culture from afar. We’re not tourists anymore; we’re people coming home to a place that was always meant to be ours.
Whether you’re planning your first Japan trip, diving into a new anime series, or considering your own move abroad, we’re here to share what we’ve learned. Real experiences, honest opinions, and zero gatekeeping—just fellow nerds who’ve been walking this path long enough to know where the good stuff is hidden.
